Changing RDP Port

In the interest of security, we highly suggest you change your RDP port to something completely random. This lowers the risk of a number of 'attacks', such as brute force (repeated attempts at guessing the user/password). In this guide we show you the steps required to change the RDP listening ports.

Step 1: Pick your new RDP port.

Step 2: Using Windows Firewall (and in any other firewall you are using) add UDP and TCP inbound rules for your new RDP port.

Step 3: Open Registry Edit (RegEdit).

Step 4: Using the side 'folders' navigate to the following subkey
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp\PortNumber

Step 5: Right-click and select modify from on the PortNumber subkey. Then select 'decimal' in the box that opens.

Step 6: Change the value data to the port you wish to use. You can change this to anything you like (as long as it isn't used by another application). Then press 'OK'.

Step 7: Exit the registry editor and then restart the service.

Step 8: This step varies depending on your remote desktop software, but you now need to edit your connection to use your new port.

Step 9: You are done! Your RDP connection is now at least a little more protected from common access attempts.
